General Paper is not only the knowledge of current affairs but understanding our place in the world. Our GP students will better understand the world by fostering a critical awareness of various political, economic and social issues in our curriculum. Students will broaden their global outlook while remaining mindful of shared historical and social experiences both within Singapore and the region. GP also seeks to develop maturity of thought, critical thinking skills, evaluation of arguments and opinions, and the proficient use of language.
Students will have to read widely to keep up with both local and global current affairs. They are required to engage in group and class discussions, and present cogent arguments through oral presentations and written work. To cultivate a strong interest in current affairs in our students, our GP tutors prepare fortnightly Current Affairs Quizzes to keep students abreast with local and global news. Our tutors also design language resources to help students strengthen their linguistic foundation.
To supplement our students’ GP experience, they participate in the annual Straits Times-Ministry of Education National Current Affairs Quiz. Our students also participate regularly in enrichment programmes like the YMCA Plain Speaking English Awards competition, The Queen's Commonwealth Essay competition and the Creative Arts Seminar. In addition, all JC1 students undergo an oral communication skills training programme to hone their public speaking and presentation skills.
