Biology (IP Years 3-4)

With recent advances in the world of Science and Medicine, there have been tremendous discoveries in the knowledge of biological systems. Many new and important fields, like Cell and Molecular Biology, have emerged to contribute to the advancement of Physiology. In IP3 and IP4 Biology, students will further deepen their understanding of processes that occur in biological systems. TJC Biology students will develop scientific inquiry skills which enable them to relate Biology to technology, society and the environment. 


IP3 Biology focuses on the structure and functions of Biological Molecules and Physiology of Organisms, while in IP4 Biology, students will explore topics like Human Health and Diseases; and Molecular Genetics. In their learning experiences, students will also be aware of the social, economic and environmental implications of biological applications and research. The curriculum allows students to conduct investigations that highlight experimental design, analysis, and application of concepts. The basic framework for this subject is our in-house THINK© Cycle pedagogy. It is a holistic approach that incorporates inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning and project-based learning. THINK© Cycle pedagogy comprises 5 elements: Trigger, Harness, Investigate, Network, and Know. This approach provides students with experiential learning that exposes them to 21st Century Competencies.


Field trips provide the ‘learning beyond classroom’ experience for students to have a sense of wonder and appreciate what they have learnt, connecting this knowledge to their world. Places visited during ‘learning beyond classroom’ experience include the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum. Selected students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Singapore Junior Biology Olympiad where they gain exposure to a higher level of scientific literacy.
